The REACH Georgia scholars at Apalachee High School are piloting a new program this year called Clarion Club offered through the non-profit Because One Matters. Because One Matters provides resources and encouragement to children and teens who may need support in some way. Through Clarion Club, the students meet with facilitators and Program Director Dr. Stephanie Willis monthly to discuss different topics, sometimes with guest speakers. Dr. Willis says they are learning valuable life skills and creating relationships. "Seeing their bond is so great. None of them really knew each other until Clarion Club and now they talk often and work well together as a group."

Because One Matters CEO and Founder Andrea Barclay adds, "We love these REACH Georgia students. We've seen such growth in them since the first club meeting."

A goal for the AHS Clarion Club this year was to organize a service project to benefit Barrow County. After researching the needs of the community, they held a food drive to collect 500 cans and non-perishables to help support The Spirit of Sharing, Inc. in Winder. The Spirit of Sharing helps provide support to people in need.

On March 27, 2024, the scholars delivered the food, stocked the shelves, and helped where needed. Spirit of Sharing Director Melinda Shealey says she's grateful for their help and their interest to learn. "It just means a lot for kids to come in and help out because they are going to be the ones who will hopefully one day carry on something like this. I especially loved when they asked questions about how to help others and what's involved."

The students say they enjoyed being a part of something that will make a difference in someone's life.
